The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is a United Nations-sanctioned international holiday for the promotion of diversity issues. This day was created as a result of the destruction of the Buddha statues of Bamiyan in Afghanistan in 2001. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed this holiday due to UNESCO's Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity in November 2001.[2] It was proclaimed by UN Resolution 57/249.

To spread awareness among people about dangers of violence and terrorism and its effect on people, society and country altogether, UGC has directed universities to observe 21st May as Anti Terrorism Day on the occasion of the death of former PM Rajiv Gandhi in 1991.

The researchers at NASA space agency has found evidence for a unique mixture of methanol, water ice, and organic molecules on the surface of Ultima Thule, which is located in the Kuiper Belt - beyond the orbit of Neptune.

To mark the role light plays in our daily lives, UNESCO has celebrated this day on 16th May for the second time.
